Turning of metal parts is a form of machining. More specific, it is a material removal process. Therefore, we cut away material from a rotating piece of material with a cutting tool called chisel. The turning process requires a turning machine or lathe. In brief, we clamp the workpiece in the machine and machine it with a cutting tool. The workpiece is a piece of pre-shaped material or a bar. We clamp it and it rotates at high speeds. The cutter is typically a single-point cutting tool. We secure it also in the machine. Although some operations make use of multi-point tools, the cutting tool feeds into the rotating workpiece. In this way it cuts away material in the form of small chips to create the desired shape.
