Water Bonding Fitting for Swimming Pools

Inline Sacrificial Anode with Solder Lug

Pool water bonding fitting (in-line water bond) for equipotential bonding of swimming pools per NEC 680.26(C) and IEC 60364-7-702. The stainless steel electrode stays in contact with circulating pool water while the bonding lug connects to the pool’s equipotential bonding grid via a solid copper conductor (≥8 AWG). This passive safety device holds the pool water and all nearby conductive surfaces at the same electrical potential, preventing stray voltage from creating a shock hazard for swimmers.

The threaded plastic body screws directly into the plumbing line (filter, pump strainer, or tee fitting). The hex nut ensures a secure, leak-free installation. No tools beyond a standard wrench required.

Item Description

What is a Pool Water Bonding Fitting?

A pool water bonding fitting is a passive electrical safety device that connects the pool water to the equipotential bonding grid. The stainless steel electrode stays in continuous contact with the circulating water, while the bonding lug connects to a solid copper conductor that ties back to all metal parts of the pool and equipment within approximately 1.5 m (5 ft) of the pool wall.

The purpose is equipotential bonding: holding the pool water and every nearby conductive surface (ladders, handrails, pump housings, light fixtures, reinforcing steel) at the same electrical potential. This prevents stray voltage from nearby electrical sources from passing through the water and creating a shock hazard for swimmers.

Important distinction: this fitting is a passive bond, not a sensor and not a fault interrupter. It does not detect leakage current. Fault detection and circuit interruption are handled by a GFCI (US) or RCD (EU) upstream in the electrical system. The bonding fitting and the GFCI/RCD serve different, complementary safety functions.

Pool Water Bonding Questions

What is pool water bonding?

Pool water bonding (also called equipotential bonding) connects the pool water to all metal parts of the pool structure and equipment. The goal is to hold everything at the same electrical potential so that a swimmer can never become the path for stray voltage. It is required by NEC 680.26(C) in the US and IEC 60364-7-702 in Europe.

Is this a sacrificial anode?

No. A sacrificial anode is a reactive metal (zinc, magnesium) that corrodes to protect other metals from galvanic corrosion. This fitting is a bonding electrode made of stainless steel. It does not corrode sacrificially. Its function is to provide an electrical connection between the pool water and the bonding grid, not to prevent corrosion through galvanic sacrifice.

Does this fitting detect electrical leakage?

No. This is a passive bonding device. It holds the water at the same potential as surrounding conductive surfaces. Fault detection and circuit interruption are handled by a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) in the US or an RCD (residual current device) in Europe. The bonding fitting and the GFCI/RCD serve different, complementary safety functions.

What wire size connects to the bonding lug?

A solid copper bonding conductor of at least 8 AWG (~8.4 mm²) is typically required. The conductor runs from the lug on this fitting to the pool's equipotential bonding grid, which ties together all metal components within approximately 1.5 m (5 ft) of the pool wall. Check your local electrical code for the exact conductor size requirement.

Where is this fitting installed?

The fitting screws into the pool plumbing line, typically at the filter, pump strainer housing, or a tee fitting in the return or suction pipe. The stainless steel electrode must be in continuous contact with the circulating pool water. Installation requires only a wrench to tighten the hex nut for a leak-free seal.

What is the minimum wetted surface area required?

NEC 680.26(C) references a minimum wetted conductive surface area of approximately 9 in² (~5,800 mm²). Commercial pool bonding fittings are designed to meet or exceed this requirement. Confirm the electrode surface area of your chosen fitting against the applicable code before installation.

Can Davantech produce custom bonding fittings?

Yes. We manufacture custom pool water bonding fittings with different thread sizes, electrode lengths, lug types, and body materials. OEM and private-label production available. The stainless steel electrode is CNC turned and the plastic body is insert molded in our factory.
